The UDI Registration Requirement<\/b><\/h4><p data-path-to-node=\"9\">The decree (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzettaufficiale.it\/eli\/id\/2023\/07\/18\/23A04010\/sg\">Legislative Decree 11\/05\/2023<\/a>) requires healthcare professionals to <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"48\">register and maintain the unique device identifier (UDI)<\/b> of medical devices received and used (with particular attention to implantable devices and Class D in vitro diagnostic devices). The objective of the law is to ensure complete traceability, from the manufacturer to patient use, to enable prompt intervention in case of defective batches. <\/p><h4 data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">2. Data Retention for Up to 15 Years<\/b><\/h4><p data-path-to-node=\"11\">The law makes no exceptions regarding timeframes: UDI code records (including batches and expiration dates) must be retained for a minimum of <b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"137\">10 years<\/b>, a period that extends to <b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"165\">15 years for implantable medical devices<\/b>. Entrusting such a volume of data to paper records or local Excel spreadsheets means exposing oneself to the very high risk of data loss, deterioration, or theft. The legislator itself recommends electronic storage.  <\/p><h4 data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">3. Fines from \u20ac4,000 to \u20ac24,500<\/b><\/h4><p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Non-compliance with these requirements is not taken lightly. data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the entry into force of the new European regulation <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2017\/745\/oj\/eng\">EU Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR)<\/a> on medical device traceability, healthcare operators are required to:<\/p><ul><li>Verify <strong>UDI (Unique Device Identification)<\/strong> labeling on all medical devices used in clinical practice.<\/li><li>Register and document the UDI of devices used on patients. <\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>The term <strong>&#8220;medical device&#8221;<\/strong> covers a wide range of items, including apparatus and equipment in direct contact with the patient for purposes of diagnosis or treatment of a clinical condition, and therefore includes many instruments commonly used by physicians.<\/p><p>The deadlines for compliance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2017\/745\/oj\/eng\">MDR regulation<\/a> on UDI coding of medical devices vary based on the device class, which is determined by the associated risk level.<\/p><p>In particular, Class III devices present a high risk to the patient.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Class III<\/strong>: includes devices such as implantable pacemakers, pulse generators, HIV diagnostic tests, automated external defibrillators, endosseous implants, and extended-wear contact lenses.<\/li><li><strong>Class II<\/strong> a\/b: includes devices such as acupuncture needles, daily contact lenses, motorized wheelchairs, infusion pumps, surgical drapes, and implantable radiofrequency transponder systems for patient identification and health information.<\/li><li><strong>Class I<\/strong>: includes low-risk devices such as elastic bandages, latex gloves, and handheld surgical instruments.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-316c08c elementor-align-center elementor-invisible elementor-widget
